Local Catholics who are ill, facing surgery, or feel a need for divine assistance can join parishioners and friends for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick immediately after the 10:30 am Principal Mass on Sunday, February 23, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Baton Rouge.
The sacrament supports those who receive the sacred Oil of the Sick, which
symbolizes the loving presence of God at a time of great physical and emotional need
and help.
The service also includes a blessing with the holy relics of Blessed Francis Xavier
Seelos, a Redemptorist priest who ministered to the sick and dying during the Yellow
Fever epidemic in 1860s New Orleans. One more miracle attributed to Seelos’ intercession is needed for the priest to be canonized, that is, elevated to sainthood.
