A Pew Research Center survey in 2019 revealed that 70 percent of U.S. Catholics do not believe the Holy Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. In 2022, a three-year National Eucharistic Revival was begun in order to enkindle in Catholics across the United States a living relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Healed, converted, and unified, Catholics are to then to go out on mission “for the life of the world.” In this second year of the Revival, June 2023–June 2024, Catholics are encouraged to participate in this enkindling within their parish. This is the task of local parishes in this “Year of Parish Revival”: to revive their parishioners in their love for Jesus in the Eucharist and to send them forth to share this love with others. Father Brent Maher, pastor of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, is having a Forty Hours Devotion, or Quarant’ore, the beautiful practice of forty hours of continual Eucharistic adoration that used to be a regular occurrence in churches around the world. While St. Agnes has the great blessing of a Eucharistic adoration chapel, the Forty Hours Devotion will offer a special time of grace, both individually and as a community. The Devotion begins at 5 pm on Thursday September 28 and concludes at 9 am on Saturday September 30. Public prayers, Masses, and opportunities for confession are scheduled during the forty hours. The Devotion will culminate with a Mass to celebrate the anniversary of the dedication of St. Joseph Cathedral on the morning of September 30 at 8 am. Refreshments and fellowship will follow Mass. Everyone is welcome to come at any time during the forty hours to pray silently or within the scheduled public events. There will be security during the evening and overnight hours.
